Northport Indian Mission UMC Open House

Wednesday, May 31 from 4 to 7 PM

Every year we celebrate the traditions and the hardships of our Native American brothers and sisters in the spring as we celebrate Native American Awareness Sunday and we take the time to send our money to support their missions and ministries. This year our Native American Churches would like to welcome you to their church during our time of Conferencing in Traverse City, MI so that you can see firsthand what they are doing.

Pastor Terry Wildman shares that the people of Northport IM are preparing lite refreshments and will be offering tours of the Native Cemetery and the Church while allowing for time and space to share stories of who they are, past and present.

They will also be welcoming Jennifer Brown and Marilyn Vanderwal, who are Native Basket Weavers.  They both grew up going to the Salem Indian Mission (Grand Rapids District). Their Uncle Lewis Church pastored Salem IM at that time.  Jennie and Marilyn will share how to make a black ash sweetgrass basket from the gathering of the black ash to preparing it to weave. Those who attend can also try their hand at weaving a small craft, a black ash sweetgrass bookmark.

Miigwetch (thank you) for taking the time to join us any time Wednesday, May 31, between 4 and 7 PM.

Church Vans will be leaving the Grand Traverse Resort, Acme, MI at 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM so that you can enjoy this event!  Or take a drive and enjoy the day on the Leland Peninsula with Northport IM as your final destination.
